Queen of Katwe edges closer to VUZU AMP
Any movie with Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo is already a winner. They've each given us some of the most captivating, critically acclaimed and award-winning big screen portrayals in recent years. The two thespians are paired up on Queen of Katwe, airing on VUZU AMP this November.
The Mira Nair directed sports drama follows the story of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan girl growing up in the impoverished peripheries of Katwe. She masters the game of chess and goes on to become a Woman Candidate Master after slaying at World Chess Olympiads.
At the tender age of 10 years, Phiona learns to navigate the tough reality and survival in the slums of Kampala. Together with her mother (Lupita) and her younger siblings, the family survives on selling food at the market and sometimes scavenging for food and water to make it through the day. Additionally, she also cares for her mother's newborn.
Tables turn when she meets Robert Katende (David), a soccer coach and chess teacher who starts giving her lessons on the game. Soon Phiona finds herself very interested in the game. As her skill quickly develops at an exceeding pace, Katende takes her under his guidance as his undisputed top player.
At the heart of it, Queen of Katwe is about victory. Phiona is able to use talent, discipline, and skill to escape the poverty and do well for herself and her family.
The movie airs on VUZU AMP on Friday, November 17th at 21:30!
