We all have that signature dish we like to whip out when we’re really trying to impress. And once you have your list of favourite go-to dishes, you’re set up for any culinary experience – without the stress of crossing your fingers and hoping the dish you’re preparing will come out right.

Hey, if you don’t really have your list set up yet, the mini chefs on MasterChef Junior will have you ready in no time. In the meantime, here is a list of the easy dishes we think everyone should know how to make.

1. A killer smashed avo and bacon

For an easy to go to breakfast, you need to be able to make smashed avocado and bacon. Top it with an egg for a more filling meal.

2. A truly crispy roast chicken

A Sunday lunch must-have – everyone enjoys a roast on the table, so it’s important to be able o make the perfect chicken roast.

For that extra crispness, leave the trimmings and add loads of seasoning.

3. A fresh pasta

You can never go wrong with the classic spaghetti bolognese or a creamy alfredo. If you can master making a fresh, wholesome pasta, you’ll love being in the kitchen.

4. A succulent steak

When you have a good steak, it’s important to treat it with the respect it deserves. A room temperature steak, a hot pan and paying close attention to the cooking time is essential. It’s also necessary to rest the steak after cooking it.

5. A filling salad

Use left-over vegetables and a few salad ingredients to whip up a filling, balanced and tasty salad. Master the ingredients which work together and those which don’t – think sweetness, acidity, substance and textures.
